Upon graduation from University of Maryland, Mr. Jensen joined the then-largest CPA firm in the world, now KPMG. He was promoted in less than 5 years to the highest non-partner position. As a tax manager, he worked with over 25 large financial institutions, including banks, savings banks, and federal savings & loan associations, and many smaller institutions as well. Mr. Jensen assisted with the opening of the original KPMG office in Columbia, Maryland and served as the lead outside tax manager to the former The Rouse Co. Mr. Jensen gained valuable experience when he was appointed to a special assignment with KPMG’s National Tax Office in Washington DC dealing with complex and unusual tax planning situations. This included serving as a liaison between KPMG and the IRS and US Treasury Department.
This experience led Mr. Jensen to accept an offer from another national CPA firm to lead its tax practice in Baltimore, Maryland, and to become a national tax partner in the firm. While there, the firm merged to create Main Hurdman and Mr. Jensen accepted a role as National Expert in partnership taxation. Mr. Jensen also developed the firm’s first national training program for financial planning, while still serving a full slate of clients nationally. His clients included the Baltimore Orioles, its general manager (Hank Peters), and many professional baseball players. Mr. Jensen advised corporate and individual clients with particular focus on creative tax, financial planning, and tax minimization strategies.
Mr. Jensen left seven years later to become a partner in another thriving CPA firm, which within two years was merged into Touche Ross, a Big 8 CPA firm at the time. Mr. Jensen joined Touche Ross as partner in charge of tax services of the Baltimore office, responsible for all client tax matters. When Touche Ross merged five years later to create Deloitte & Touche (a Big 4 CPA firm), Mr. Jensen soon left for greater independence with a local CPA firm that was a leader in the financial institution industry. He joined that firm as the new Tax Partner in charge of tax services.
In 2002, Mr. Jensen pursued his entrepreneurial desires and formed his own financial and tax services firm, WealthServe LLC. Mr. Jensen simultaneously accepted professional alliance with the L. Warner Companies to lead the firm’s association with National Wealth Strategies Consulting, serving as President – Wealth Strategies. Mr. Jensen advised many very high-net-worth business owners and individuals from all industries and work closely with a nationwide list of legal and financial experts on tax minimization strategies.
Mr. Jensen served as president of the Baltimore Association of Tax Counsel, Chairman of the Chesapeake Tax Conference, Co-Chairman of the Advanced Tax Institute, and Treasurer of the Baltimore city Rotary Club. In addition to his CPA license, Mr. Jensen secured health and life insurance licensed and FINRA security licenses for Series 6, 7, 63 and 65. Mr. Jensen has spoken before numerous groups on tax and financial topics and has had over twenty tax planning articles published nationally over the years.
A highlight of Mr. Jensen’s career was working directly with Donald Alexander, former Commissioner of the IRS, to successfully secure a significant tax refund from the US Treasury Department. Mr. Jensen have received various honors over the years, including recognition as a Top Maryland CPA (Smart CEO Magazine; 2004), a National Top 100 CPA Tax Advisor (CPA Magazine; 2006), and a National Top 40 CPA Tax Advisor (CPA Magazine; 2009).
